Essential oils have been used since ancient times when they were found in temples and mixed into perfumes. In 4500 BC, Egyptians used aromatic substances for makeup and lotions. They’re now also commonly known as aromatherapy. According to the National Institute of Health, aromatherapy is a complementary and alternative medicine that uses plant oils that give off pleasant solid aromas to promote relaxation, a sense of well-being, and healing. But what are essential oils?

Essential oils come from plants. They are defined as scented liquid taken from certain plants using steam/ pressure. They are concentrated, volatile aromatic liquids obtained from the fruits, seeds, flowers, bark, stems, roots, leaves, or other parts of a plant. They contain natural chemicals that give the plant its “essence.” They help with common symptoms and everyday concerns, as well as help balance your whole being naturally.

Benefits of Essential oils

The benefits of essential oils are enormous. They :

  • help to regulate your immune system
  • support your respiratory system
  • help to regulate emotions
  • ease nervous tension and reduces stress
  • nurture hair growth,
  • boost your energy levels
  • help you relax and sleep soundly, and so much more.

In short, they’re a natural form of aromatherapy for relaxation. They can be ingested orally or applied topically to give relief from headaches and depression. So how do you use essential oils for aromatherapy?

How to use Essential oils?

There are two main methods of applying essential oils: inhalation and massaging.

Inhalation: To inhale the aroma of essential oil, gently place a drop on your palm, rub your hands together and cup your hands around your nose. Breathe in and out deeply to fill up all the little sinuses.

Massaging: Aromatic oils are often applied directly to the skin by using a carrier oil such as jojoba, grapeseed, or coconut oil. For example, put 2-3 drops of lavender essential oil in about 1/2 teaspoon (1 tablespoon) of any carrier oil and massage it into your face before bedtime to promote relaxation before going off to dreamland. On the other hand, add a drop of peppermint oil to about half a teaspoon of carrier oil to help clear your head and soothe tired muscles after a hard day.

Another way is to put a small amount (2–4 drops) of essential oil in your palm and inhale simultaneously as rubbing hands together (not forgetting to rub on your body).

Other ways include:

• Add 1–3 drops of essential oil to water in a spray bottle and use as an air freshener (add two drops of essential oils for every 10mL of water).

• Add five drops of essential oils with one tablespoon full of base oil such as sweet almond or sunflower and massage into skin after showering.

• Blend 10 drops of essential oil with 1-ounce carrier oil such as sweet almond or sesame oil. Use as a massage oil and leave on skin for up to an hour.

Essential oils may also be used to make a sachet. Fill an old clean sock or cloth bag with 2-3 tsp of other herbs (such as lavender, chamomile, or rosemary), tie up & leave overnight to infuse. Then, use, throw out the herbs (don’t compost the bag) & add one drop of essential oil to each sachet. Essential oils have been used for many years in indigenous cultures as a valuable part of their medicine chest. For example, Native American and First Nations people used fresh or dried mistletoe for numerous medical purposes, including curing headaches, sore throats, and infections.

Essential oils should be diluted to avoid any irritation or sensitization. However, they are very potent, so only a tiny amount (maybe 1-3 drops) is needed. The best way to experience aromatherapy is to put them on your skin and inhale the aroma. Essential oils can also be used as insect repellents, antifungal agents, antimicrobial against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. There are several essential oil blends made from many different essential oil types. All of these types of blends have different properties.

The best way to use these blends is to put a few drops of the oil on a sterile gauze pad and rub it on the affected area of your skin (for example, an insect bite). Afterward, wrap it into a bandage to keep it there.

These blends contain many essential oils with no medicinal properties. However, they do have pleasant aromas and could be used for aromatherapy (for example, putting some on your pillow at night). There are hundreds of different essential oil blends to choose from, but most contain toxic oils that could cause a person’s body problems.

Fruit scents are bad for your nasal passage; that is why they should not be used in a diffuser.

Extraction of Essential Oils

There are several methods of extraction that can be used. External methods use mechanical means, such as pressing or relying on physical pressure from water or steam. Those are generally cheaper but deliver lower-quality oils in comparison to their internal counterparts.

The internal methods are usually more complex. A standard method is to distill the plant material using steam to yield a highly concentrated essential oil. Many essential oils can be distilled multiple times before the process is complete as the steam vaporizes lighter compounds and releases heavier ones later on into the condenser. This is why some essential oils are considered pure once they have been distilled four or more times.

Another internal technique for making Almond oils involves something called solvent extraction. Solvent extraction uses a solution, either synthetic or organic, to dissolve away all unwanted plant material to deliver a highly concentrated oil for further use. Most essential oils are made using solvent extraction. It is also very efficient and can be applied on larger scales allowing for more economic efficiency.

Unadulterated Essential oils at NoshOrgano

Plants create essential oils naturally and store them in tiny molecular sacs- each type of plant stores essential oils in different places. Flowering plants may store oils close to the center of their petals to attract bees, but some plants store them in the roots or the bark. Citrus plants like oranges, lemons, and limes, often store their essential oils in the rinds of their fruit. These oils are the essence of the odor of the plant. It’s super ironic that these oils aren’t oily. Essential oils are not directly applied to the skin.

Generally, they are used by inhaling them. But can also be diluted and applied to the skin.

NoshOrgano supplies natural essential oils grown in its indigenous area, harvested at its peak time, adequately distilled, and not tampered with or altered in any way. Natural essential oils aren’t just labeled as 100% natural but are genuinely in their purest form without adulteration or additives.

Our essential oils are not just labeled 100% pure but are genuinely in their purest form, with no adulteration or additives.

Caution

Some essential oils are toxic to the liver and should never be taken internally. This is because they contain “thujone,” which can damage the liver. In addition, some essential oils are very toxic to humans and animals (cats especially), so it’s best to keep them out of their reach as they could cause severe problems for your pet (for example, vomiting or diarrhea).

It’s best to use organic materials for your diffuser, but using high-quality brands is more environmentally friendly than purchasing from companies that produce synthetic blends. In addition, most brands contain toxic materials (like alcohol and limonene), which should be avoided. Aerosol sprays, mists, and liquids contain high concentrations of alcohol (ethanol) which interferes with the breathing system and can cause irreversible damage to the liver/kidneys (liver toxicity).

And lastly, keep in mind that all essential oils are highly concentrated, and they will eventually metabolize when applied to your skin. As a result, applying essential oils two or three times a day for long periods can cause dryness of the skin and irritation due to increased friction. You’ll also see more pimples break out in the early stages after starting this process.
